A Walk on Volcán Osorno

The view from Puerto Varas is dominated by Volcán Osorno, the 8,700-foot volcano across Lago Llanquihue to the east (I think "Osorno" is Spanish for "Fuji").  It's one of several stratovolcanoes in the Southern Andes.  In the aerial photo below shot over the wing, you can see Osorno flanked on the left by Volcán Puntiagudo and on the right by Cerro Tronador (on the Argentine border near Bariloche).  Snow-capped Tronador is also in the close-up shot from atop Osorno, which last erupted in 1869.

We met our new guide, Pablo, in the morning on February 27th and drove along the south side of the lake to Ensenada.  From there we drove up the volcano to a ski area and walked further up on a crunchy lava surface to get some terrific views of the lake and other mountains and volcanoes to the east.  We continued east to Petrohué, on the shore of Lago Todos Los Santos, and had a nice lunch at the Hotel Petrohué.  Travelers come here to get a boat to Peulla at the eastern end of this long, narrow lake (there is no road) and then cross the border into Argentina.

Santiago

On February 28th we flew from Puerto Montt to Santiago and checked into the Hotel Orly.  Carla, Tom, Peg, & Ron flew home from there while Pamela, Jim, Bobby, & JC flew 2,000 miles west to Rapa Nui (Easter Island).
